“Kannoli-Vision Saver”, a rural out-reach eye care program, was launched in December 1994 in Sri Sankara Health Centre, Pammal. This Centre was later converted into an exclusive high-tech ophthalmic hospital. Sankara Eye Hospital, thus established to provide FREE or subsidized medical relief to the poor, needy, down trodden and economically backward sects of people, particularly relating to eye diseases.
So far this hospital has performed 126138 cataract surgeries of which 93% are absolutely FREE. During 2009-10, 11030 cataract surgeries have been performed and this year 9450 cataract surgeries.
The three-storied hospital has 140 beds, 18 independent bath attached rooms, three sophisticated operation theatres, highly trained and committed human resource including 11 surgeons. This hospital performs Small Incision Cataract Surgery (SICS) with Intra-ocular Lens (IOL).
While the hospital package is Rs.10,000/- for paying patients towards their stay, food and surgery, it is only Rs.9,000/- for the day care. Similarly the package for Phacoemulsification surgery is only Rs.15,000/-. The patient and the attendant are provided with coffee, breakfast, lunch and dinner during their stay in the hospital.
The Hospital welcomes everyone for a visit and spread this message amongst their friends and relatives both in middle and higher income groups to avail the services.
The Hospital also appeals for the generous support to create an endowment of Rs.10,000/- or multiples thereof on their Birthday / Wedding day / in remembrance of their near and dear. The interest accrued will be utilized for one or more free surgery to poor patients year after year.
